LHARG Monthly News – February, 2024

The Group has been very busy. Dan, KN6DRN and Art, KI6GYY hosted a table at a recent New Resident Orientation and chatted with two former Hams. They were excited to hear about our club. The airwaves were alive for the North America QSO Party. We made over 60 contacts including 26 States, Puerto Rico and Canada. The annual Winter Field Day challenges Ham operators’ emergency preparedness capabilities in various conditions and pushes us to new levels. It is held over two days and operators are encouraged to work outdoors although indoor set ups are allowed. The Group amassed over 130 contacts and tested battery operated power sources as well as portable antennas.

Meetings are held at the South Tower every Monday night at 6:30 PM. Our club conducts a weekly radio network at 7:00 PM every Monday on the W6LHR Repeater at 147.030 MHz, 167.9 PL. Field Day 2022 was hot and fun! We contacted 208 fellow Ham operators from all over the USA, Canada and Mexico. With 64 CW, 99 digital and 45 phone contacts, we came away with a strong sense of accomplishment and teamwork. Top States were California, Oregon and Colorado. Canada came in strong as well. Dan’s Grandson, Caleb, age 8, contacted 5 operators, several in Canada. Equally important, 14 visitors came by to learn more about Ham radio. Another high point of Field day was a visit by our Section Manager, Carol, KP4MD. Carol visited over 18 different Club sites and we were honored that she chose our site to come by and say hello and take Facebook pictures. Field Day 2021 Results

Field Day 2021 was hot but we accomplished a lot and had fun. Antennas went up early and by 11:00 AM we were on the air. We erected two Verticals and one End Fed Antenna and worked 20, 40 and 15 Meters. Our Banner and Visitor Log In sheets were proudly displayed. Several folks stopped by and information was shared. We had a total of 183 QSO’s (contacts) 56 on SSB and 127 on Digital. Our coverage was widespread, covering 29 States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Our total score of 1,490 is a Club high. Dan’s, KN6DRN, Grandson, Caleb, made his first contact and then another 5! At seven years old, he was very successful and had big smiles throughout. Field Day 2020 Results

This year’s Field Day was quite different than all past Field Days. Like most Clubs and Groups across the Country, we chose to participate from our homes due to Covid-19 health concerns. Despite the lack of camaraderie and pizza, it was fun and productive. Five of our members made contacts from their home base. A variety of modes, bands and power sources were employed. CW and phone were the main modes and Commercial and Battery power were utilized.

We recorded 143 contacts in 15 different States and 25 different Sections. Two rookie members, Paul KN6DRM and Dan KN6DRN, participating in their first Field Day, recorded a combined contact list of 69 stations. Well done! This was a Field Day to remember with unique circumstances. We look forward to a more traditional event next year when we can all be together.

Field Day 2020 Update

After recently learning the the Association has not approved the Sports Pavilion area open for Club activities, we have decided to participate in Field Day from our individual homes. The ARRL has approved this manner of logging contacts and submitting them under the Club’s name for aggregate credit. We hope everyone stays safe and has fun making as many contacts as possible.
